Crane Lake Chloride Reduction Demonstration Project
Minnetonka
Project Number: CL-4
Project Status | Proposed
A scope and budget for a feasibility study was approved by the BCWMC in July 2024. The study included chloride monitoring at ponds around the lake and within the lake, assessment of sources of chloride in the watershed draining to the lake, mass balance modeling, estimating the chloride load reduction necessary to meet water quality standards, and analyzing multiple alternatives to meet the project goals.
In June 2026, the BCWMC approved the feasibility study and the recommended implementation of activities in three phases including engagement with property owners in the subwatershed on contracting and winter maintenance, development of a Smart Salting retrofit plan, and possibly sharing the cost of upgrading winter maintenance equipment for reducing salt use and upgrading salt storage areas.
Project Funding | Not Grant Funded
The estimated cost of this project is $464,200 which is proposed to be paid by a levy through Hennepin County on all watershed residents.
Project Description
Chloride levels in Crane Lake have risen significantly in recent years. Biological monitoring in the lake indicates that high chloride levels are likely impacting aquatic life. In coordination with the City of Minnetonka, this project will implement mechanisms or practices to reduce chlorides reaching the lake. Because high chlorides are an issue throughout the watershed, this project could be a demonstration for implementation in other areas.
In June 2026, the BCWMC approved the feasibility study and the recommended implementation of activities in three phases:
1a. Assist Private Properties with Procuring/Contracting Winter Maintenance
1b. Track Application Rates in Winter Deicing Operations
2a Develop and Provide Funding Toward Alternative Salt Storage Options for Private Properties
2b. Develop and Provide Funding Toward Smart Salting Retrofit Plan at Ridgedale
3a. Deicing Equipment Loan/Purchase Program
3b. Provide Abrasives to Reduce Salt Use
Project Announcements
A public hearing on this project will be held on September 17, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. at Golden Valley City Hall.
